Edgecomb man LifeFlighted
UPDATE: The Edgecomb man is "doing okay and has been released from the hospital," Lincoln County Sheriff Todd Brackett said. Since no crime was committed and the incident occurred on private property, the sheriff's office is not going to release the man's name, Brackett said.
An Edgecomb man with wounds from a .38 caliber pistol, which had discharged in his coat pocket and sent a bullet through his chest and into his neck, was transported to a Lewiston hospital December 5 at approximately 1 p.m., Edgecomb Fire Chief Roy Potter said.
Potter said he and other emergency personnel worked to control the man's bleeding at 8 Moonlight Drive in Edgecomb, the scene of the accident. The man traveled by ambulance to the Edgecomb Fire Station, where LifeFlight of Maine left with him for Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Potter said.
The man was going in and out of consciousness, and speaking with the ambulance crew when Potter was with him. The chief was not sure what caused the gun to go off, but it was an unintentional shooting, he said.
While the bullet was believed to possibly still be lodged in the man's neck, the wounds were declared non life-threatening on December 6.
The man reported the incident himself by phone at approximately 12:33 p.m.
The Edgecomb and Wiscasset fire departments, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office and the Wiscasset Emergency Medical Service all responded to the incident.
The name of the man has not yet been released because his family has not been notified.
