Feed Our Scholars grateful for support
Wiscasset’s Feed Our Scholars would like to give a great shout of appreciation to Ames Supply for hosting the FOS Bake Sale and Raffle event. We would also like to thank those who donated items for the sale and those who purchased them. Two children will be supported, thanks to all. While the check for 54 children (25 in the primary, 25 in the middle, 4 in Head Start) has already been sent to Good Shepherd for the first semester, the goal of upping the number to 60 for the second semester of this year is in our sights, so stay tuned for other fundraising activities.
Thanks to Bud Gallagher of Floatworks, Fogg Art, and private individuals for donations of raffle items. Speaking of raffle items, the winners of the raffle include: Margot Stiassni, who won the children's books; Cindie Averill, who won the art print; P.J. Fairfield, who won the mooring check; Hilma Foster, who won the Maine items; and Pam Soule, who won the spa basket.
Thanks, also, to Oakhurst Dairy that once again has donated orange juice coupons for the backpackers. As with last year’s gift, FOS will include the coupons in the children’s Thanksgiving weekend packs as a special little treat.
A group of knitters has been churning out hats and mittens in anticipation of the coming cold weather. Thanks to them, Wiscasset school children will be a little warmer in cold weather.
Last year, FOS donated supplies and backpacks to each school at the start of the school year. This year, the group has been asked to donate supplies again. If there are parents, grandparents and concerned people who would like to help out with this, please consider possibly purchasing an extra notebook, pack of pencils, pens, crayons, markers, scissors, etc.
Those supplies could be dropped off at St. Philip’s Church, 12 Hodge St., Wiscasset. A donation box, clearly marked, can be found near the Help Yourself Shelf Food Pantry door in the Lippiat Hall. Or, if you’d rather, send a check to Feed Our Scholars at St. Philip’s, noting in the memo line for “school supplies” and our shopper will do the job for you, to be delivered to each school.
Children’s future success depends on a good start. Step one is proper nutrition. Just as a furnace needs fuel to run, so the body needs food to grow properly. Step two is feeding the brain with education. The African saying that it takes a village to raise a child is part of the group’s basic philosophy. Feed Our Scholars’ goal is to positively impact the future of children needing a leg up. You, too, can help.
If interested in being involved, contact St. Philip’s at 207-882-7184, or visit the FOS website (feedourscholars.wordpress.com) or Facebook page (www.facebook.com/WiscassetFeedOurScholars), leaving a message for response.
