First Congo plans special service Nov. 9
Rev. John Hogue, pastor of First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, will reach back into history in his sermon on Nov. 9, as he recounts the story of four chaplains.
His story starts on the evening of Feb. 2, 1943, when the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was crowded to capacity, carrying 902 servicemen, merchant seamen, and civilian workers. Once a luxury coastal liner, the 5,649-ton vessel had been converted into an Army transport ship. The Dorchester, one of three ships in the SG-19 convoy, was moving steadily across the icy waters from Newfoundland toward an American base in Greenland. SG-19 was escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba and Comanche.
Rev. John invites the community to the 10 a.m. worship when he reveals the true story of four chaplains in the convoy. All veterans will be remembered and honored in this special service on Sunday.
The First Congregational Church of Wiscasset, located at 28 High St., is an open and affirming church. For more information, call the church office at 882-7544.
