Friends of Wiscasset Library to celebrate group’s 60 years
In 1966, a group of residents saw a need to help raise money and awareness of our Library and formed the Friends of the Wiscasset Library.
The world has changed since those early days. Lyndon Johnson was president, and "The Sound of Music" won the Academy Award for Best Picture.
Culture has changed, as well. Slang included "groovy" and "far out." We sang and danced to the Beatles ("Help") and the Rolling Stones ("| Can't Get No Satisfaction"). Some important things have not changed.
The Friends are still meeting and working to raise awareness of the Library and raise money to assist with special and needed expenses.
In the following years, generations of Friends have dedicated their time, their creativity and commitment to building an organization that serves our community. As members we strive to honor our past, celebrate today and dream big for tomorrow. We are now 50 members, strong and growing.
Since 2020, the Friends have donated in excess of $23,000 and were able to assist with numerous expenses not limited to repair of an antique door, purchase of STEM kits, counter purchase and painting of the circulation area, Cricut purchase, emergency building repairs, Interlibrary Loan Program, and Children and Adult Programs.
Our celebration of this monumental event will begin on April 23 with a reception at the Library (21 High St.) at 5 p.m. Throughout the year, there will be additional events, and we hope to see you and explain why we are so committed to our Library.
