George Irving Haynes, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2013 with his family by his side in Port Huron, Mich., after suffering a heart attack.

He was born in Waltham, Mass., on April 1, 1928, son of Persis Bernice Thompson and John Haynes. He attended Waltham schools, excelling in sports, especially ice hockey, which earned him a hockey scholarship to Boston University in 1946 where he played four years of varsity hockey while earning a degree in business administration.

It was at Boston University where he met Mabelle Weatherbee Piper of Damariscotta, Maine, whom he married in Damariscotta on March 21, 1950.  Upon graduation he was hired by Burroughs Corporation in Boston for a successful 35-year career that spanned entry level sales to upper corporate management.

Through promotions, George and Mabelle moved often, leaving Waltham to live in Levittown, Oriskany, N.Y., and Garden City, N.Y., and then to Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Fayetteville, N.Y.

He retired in 1985. After retirement their primary homes were in East Boothbay and Naples, Fla.  They recently moved to Michigan to be closer to family.

George enjoyed living near the ocean, traveling, dining out (he especially loved Maine fried clams), reading about and discussing business, recounting life stories and being with family and friends. He was a passionate sports fan, especially for teams in Boston, as well as an avid golfer in his earlier years.

George is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mabelle; four children, Susan M. Haynes of Oneida, N.Y., Shelley G. Pierce of Paradise, Mich., Thomas P. Haynes and wife Carin Torp of Keene, N.H., and George P. Haynes of Clyde, Mich.; five grandchildren, Jon Markoff and wife Deanna of Hempstead, N.Y., Hayley Carroll of Clinton, N.Y., Brian, Sara, and Joseph Haynes of Clyde, Mich.; his brother, Fred Haynes and wife RoxAnn of Cherry Hills Village, Colo.; his sister, Lois Moran and husband Ollie of Naples, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. His parents, a brother Lloyd, sisters Eileen and Bernice, and a grandson Philip died earlier.

A memorial service honoring and celebrating his life will be held in Maine at a time to be determined. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Damariscotta.   Cremation services and online guest book provided by Jowett Funeral Home, Port Huron, Michigan at www.jowettfuneraldirectors.com/.
