Gold/Smith Gallery features Jean Swan Gordon
The marvelous, dizzying continuous line drawings by East Boothbay resident Jean Swan Gordon will be the subjects of a one-woman exhibit at Gold/Smith Gallery from November 1 through December 20.
The figure studies, mostly rendered over 20 years ago at the life drawing group at John Dunning's studio on School Street in East Boothbay, were recently rediscovered by Jean Gordon, hidden away in a forgotten portfolio.
The watercolor and ink flowers were were also rediscovered by her retired gallerista in California while she was cleaning out a forgotten storage closet. These paintings were also about 20 years old.
Whether figure or flower, Gordon's drawings are bold and fearless explorations in the nature of life. The absence of color in the figure studies are a chance to catch one’s breath from the vibrant colors of her bouquets and yet these reclining models merely mock the sensuality of her flowers with their lively curves and poses.
When shown the figure studies this past autumn, the owners of Gold/Smith Gallery, John and Karen Vander, jumped at the chance to have a winter show with them. They are a perfect foil for winter and its white landscape and frosty weather.
There will be an open house at the gallery Saturday, Nov. 3 from 3 to 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend. The gallery is located at 41 Commercial St., Boothbay Harbor, and is generally open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. For more information, the gallery can be reached at 633-6252.
