Good news, keep it coming

Most any week brings some stories that make us proud of Wiscasset and its neighbors and proud to be part of them through the articles, photos and more that chronicle them on these pages and online. Sometimes we also do that in the editorials. This is one of those weeks.

Monday was like a Tuesday for the paper as the busiest day of the week for prepping our print pages came early, due to Independence Day. A crunch day gets even busier on short weeks like these, and busier still when news happens that must not wait or you could wait on, but it is so local and so encouraging, you get to it.

So I moved on a tip from Jessica Merry, about getting to see husband and Assistant Wiscasset Fire Chief Nick Merry help a driver on the interstate Sunday night. His choice to help where he didn't have to underscores the best of public safety.

Thank you, Nick Merry, for representing Wiscasset well and thank you, Jessica Merry, for sharing it with us Monday.

Have you been seeing the flockings of fake sheep around town? A week into First Congregational Church of Wiscasset’s new project of good will and fundraising, I am starting to lose track of the number I’ve seen.

Whichever donor(s) are responsible, good for you for taking part. It’s nice to see any community project do well. And good for First Congo for rolling out a fun idea that looks like it may be a hit. May it help show tourists and motorists the town’s sense of humor and community.

A quick shout out to Lucia Droby and Wiscasset Art Walk exhibitors, businesses, performers and goers. Last week’s start turned out fine and fun as always after a miserable weather day that did not force its cancellation.

This last bit of kudos crosses the town line into Woolwich. As Phil Di Vece tells us, Woolwich Day organizers are cooking up something new along with the food and other fun for the annual event in August: A race across Nequassset Lake via canoe or kayak.  How local, how summer, how new, how fun. Keep coming up with new ideas, organizers of events around our region. We love the traditions and the inventive spirit alike.
