Half a year of good
They said it couldn't be done.
Just kidding. Anyone would know better than to doubt we could come up with five good things a month that happened in or near Wiscasset, for every month of 2025. But we are very pleased to announce, with this month's installment, we have hit the halfway mark on this thoroughly positive and easy enterprise.
So for June, let's start with graduation. It never gets old, the families, friends, officials and others honoring Wiscasset's latest class to earn its diplomas. And while this was not the ceremony's first year back in Wiscasset Middle High School's Stover Auditorium post-COVID, it still feels exciting that it is back there, where it should be. Massive kudos to Wiscasset Speedway for hosting it for years, but being able to see students graduate where they learned and where graduation is traditionally held just feels right.
At this writing, June's last Saturday was set to bring St. Philip's Episcopal Church's 71st Strawberry Festival, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last Saturday broke the Midcoast's Saturday rain curse. Can we ask for another picture-perfect Saturday this week, despite the early forecasts to the contrary?
What else is good locally this June? How about democracy? Wiscasset did what it does in June, elections and budgetary and other decisions. Not every country gets to do this or do it without fear. Thank you to our founding fathers and veterans and everyone who runs for the seats or works at the polls and/or in the absentee ballot process. Westport Island and Alna also voted in June, although Alna does most of its local decision-making in March. And whenever towns vote, we greatly appreciate their getting the results to us immediately, as they do; and then we publish the results right away at wiscassetnewspaper.com and post the links to them on our Facebook page.
The Harvey Gamage visited Wiscasset and Wiscasset got to visit it, with last Sunday's open house. Wiscasset has its own beautiful harbor and it brings good things and people into town.
And this month's fifth spot, although these are only in the order I thought of them, goes to Wiscasset's future of the schools committee's significant progress in recent weeks toward its final report, years in the making in one form or another. It sounds like the work has not been simple, unlike our monthly task and privilege to come up with "five good things."
