Healthy Lincoln County now offers naloxone open office hours

Tue, 07/20/2021 - 7:30am

Healthy Lincoln County (HLC) will now be opening its office doors for community members to obtain naloxone. Beginning Aug.. 4, HLC will be offering free naloxone kits to anyone in the community from 1 to 4:30 p.m. at 281 Main Street in Damariscotta.

Naloxone, more commonly known as Narcan, is a medication that immediately reverses the effects of opioids in the body. It is a nasal spray that does not provide a high, is not addictive, and can save a life in the event of an overdose. Narcan is only effective with opioids and cannot reverse any other type of overdose. Most importantly, Narcan should always be partnered with calling 911, as Narcan can wear off 30-90 minutes after use. Medical treatment is necessary if anyone, including a friend, family member or loved one experiences an overdose.

Healthy Lincoln County hopes to assist in the ongoing effort to reduce deaths related to opioid overdose. In addition, HLC hopes to provide resources within the community to break down barriers and stigma related to opioid use, and promote the incredible work already being done by organizations within Lincoln County.
