High speed chase leads to arrest, injuries
Jason Gallagher, 32, was transported to Maine Medical Center after rolling his 2013 Kia Optima near the intersection of the Huntoon Hill Road on Route 27 in Wiscasset May 9. The accident occurred following a high speed chase involving Wiscasset police.
Gallagher was wanted on six outstanding warrants and owes about $9,000 in unpaid fines and fees, according to a press release from the Wiscasset Police Department. Chief Troy Cline also said Gallager's driver's license had been revoked.
Cline had been asked to conduct a traffic stop for another law enforcement agency on two vehicles traveling south on Route 1: the Kia, bearing a Massachusetts license plate, and a red 2002 Pontiac Grand Prix, bearing a Maine license plate, operated by Gallagher's father, Joseph Gallagher.
Cline attempted to stop the two cars on Main Street in Wiscasset after crossing the Donald E. Davey Bridge. Joseph Gallagher, in the Grand Prix, did not initially yield to Cline's vehicle and Jason Gallagher accelerated his Kia, according to Wiscasset police.
Jason Gallagher drove northbound on Route 27 toward Gardiner at high speed, with Cline in pursuit. Cline briefly lost sight of the Kia, then located it near the intersection of Huntoon Hill Road on Route 27, where it had flipped over. As law enforcement officials, fire department and emergency medical service personnel managed the scene, traffic was redirected around the area.
Law enforcement officials from Wiscasset Police Department and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office are conducting separate investigations into the crash and the pursuit.
Joseph Gallagher, 58, was arrested at the scene of the accident by Lincoln County Major Ken Mason for, “hindering apprehension or prosecution and obstructing government administration,” class D crimes. The elder Gallagher bailed out of Two Bridges Regional Jail that same day, according to Mason, and is scheduled to appear in Lincoln County District Court on June 26.
Charges related to the pursuit of Jason Gallagher are pending as the investigation continues.
