With all precincts now reporting, the primary race for District 53, between Democratic Allison Hepler of Woolwich and Will Neilson of Arrowsic is very close, but Neilson appears to have won the race.

Neilson is ahead, 371-352, a margin of 2.63 percent. Under state law, Hepler could request a recount, but she would have to pay $500. If the recount went in her favor, that money would be refunded. Hepler was not available to discuss her options by press time.

The eventual winner would face Republican Jeffrey Pierce in November.

Also in question is the State Senate Republican primary for District 23. After a last-minute endorsement by Gov. Paul LePage on Friday, June 10, Guy Lebida of Bowdoin pulled slightly ahead of Topsham incumbent Linda Baker. LePage endorsed several more conservative challengers in the 2016 race.

Lebida is currently ahead of Baker, 1,074-1,034, which is within the margin that would allow Baker to request a free recount. She was unavailable to speak by press time.

The winner of this race will face off against Eloise Vitelli in the general election.

Lincoln County, like several other Midcoast counties, is supporting Brunswick’s Mark Holbrook over Ande Smith for the Republican primary for Congressional District 1, by a fairly wide margin, but two communities, Wiscasset and Whitefield, have not yet furnished their towns’ results. Currently, in Lincoln County Holbrook is well ahead of his opponent, 669-462, a margin of about 60 percent to 40 percent. Statewide, however, according to the Secretary of State’s office, Holbrook leads by a much smaller margin, 52 percent to 48 percent, with about 88 percent of the precincts reporting. The winner of this primary would face Democratic incumbent Chellie Pingree in November.
