Sophia Scott to perform debut album at the Poe Theater
Sophia Suzanne is a 17-year-old singer/songwriter and guitarist from Boothbay. On Thursday, May 22 at 7 p.m., she will perform songs from her debut album, "Impatient Child," at the Poe Theater at 81 Academy Hill Road in Newcastle. This performance is one-night only with a band of student musicians.
Sophia has performed with Maine State Music Theatre and Heartwood's drama program and won first place for four consecutive years at the NATS Musical Theater Competition. Throughout high school, Sophia has been selected for the Districts III, All-State, and All-Eastern choir festivals. She has won awards for her vocal arrangements, original underscore, and acting at the Maine State One-Act Festivals.
In 2023, she received a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music's Aspire Summer Program for guitar. She recently starred in and produced the score for the full-length film, Getting Along. Sophia teaches beginner guitar and music theory lessons to children in Midcoast Maine. Her debut single "Steady" is out now on all streaming platforms.
" I wrote ‘Steady’ when I was 15 on a late night in December," shares Sophia. "My songwriting process consists of me being completely vulnerable, and myself. In these uncertain times, I aspire to make others feel less alone. This song originated with only classical guitar and vocals, but soon evolved into an arrangement with strings, percussion, and mandolin. I used a combination of acoustic and cinematic instrumentation to capture the emotional transformation of the piece. 'Steady' speaks to the fears of growing up as a teenager, and the desire for a sense of belonging in this world.
"It was an honor to co-produce this song with my dad, Guy Scott. Our late-night studio sessions were a bonding experience! I could not have done this without his tech savvy and music engineering.”
Sophia is heading to the Los Angeles this fall to study music production with a concentration in film scoring at the University of Southern California’s (USC) prestigious Thorton School of Music, and a double minor in sociology and acting from USC’s McCarthy Honor’s College.
