Seahawks start strong with indoor track opener
The Boothbay Region High School indoor track team had a strong opening meet Dec. 19 in Gorham. Ben Gapski, the sole Wiscasset athlete, led the team with a long jump win that set a new program record. In addition, the team had five more top-three placements.
In total, six athletes qualified for state championships in nine events, wasting no time reaching goals for the season. Gapski also set a new program record in the 55m hurdles.
Boys varsity results were: Lysander Lefevre placed 15th in the 55m dash in 7.73; Lefevre placed 17th in the 200m dash in 28.40; Lefevre placed fourth in the 400m dash in 1:04.92; AJ Crocker, Ross Gaffney and Nathan Percival placed ninth, 20th and 21st in the one-mile run in 5:09.77, 5:46.64 and 5:46.64; Crocker, Gaffney and Percival placed second, sixth and seventh in the two-mile run in 11:14.47, 12:47.83, and 13:00.50; Gapski placed second in the 55m hurdles in 9.11; Gapski and Lefevre placed first and ninth in the long jump with 18-5.25 and 15-00.00; Gapski placed second in the triple jump with 36-10; and Logan Bourne and Casey Phelps placed fifth and eighth in shot put with 35-11.75 and 32-10.75.
For the girls, Rose Campbell and Kora McKenney placed fourth and 13th in the 55m dash in 7.93 and 10.00; Campbell placed third in the 200m dash in 30.24; Campbell placed fifth in the 400m dash in 1:12.51; Lexi Hughes placed seventh in the 800m run in 3:01.72; Maggie McCarthy placed ninth in the one-mile run in 7:00.34; McCarthy placed eighth in the two-mile run in 15:36.84; Moriah Smith placed third in the long jump with 13-05.75 and fourth in the triple jump with 9-05.75; and Campbell and McKenney placed fourth and sixth in shot put with 24-10.25 and 18-04.00.
The next meet is at University of Southern Maine in Gorham Jan. 2 and 3.
