Lincoln County Recycling announces new program at Wiscasset Transfer Station

Since July 1, single stream recycling at Wiscasset Transfer Station has ceased and a new program for recycling has begun. Returning to a sorting system that can give us a better return is important to the program’s economics. While single sort has made it easy for the residents of Wiscasset, Westport Island and Alna, it has made it more difficult for the recyclers, especially since China restricted imports of certain recyclables, including mixed paper –magazines, office paper, junk mail – and most plastics. Communities need to make recycling cleaner.

Research suggests single-sort systems have high enough rates of contamination to potentially offset gains in participation. By sorting according to recommendations of Lincoln County Recycling, towns will have a better opportunity to save money by eliminating the single-stream tipping fees and the cost of transportation.

A convenient informational poster is available at all Lincoln County transfer stations and at www.lincolncountymaine.me. Or pick up a copy at the Lincoln County Regional Planning office at 297 Bath Road, Wiscasset. More information will be forthcoming over the next few months.  Or stop by Wiscasset Transfer Station to learn more.
