Logan Melcher overcomes adversity at Wiscasset Speedway
While heavy fog rolled into coastal Maine on Saturday afternoon, Wiscasset Speedway was able to keep the action rolling along and successfully beat Mother Nature’s time clock, hosting a full Group 1 racing program.
The Davis Erector Group 207 Crate Modifieds were the spotlight division of the night with two feature races. Bubba Pelton took off with the early lead in the first race and held off a hard-charging John Ricci as the laps wound down, scoring the victory. Ryan Phillips held the upper hand in the second feature, but Pelton pulled to his door on lap 10, challenging for the top spot. Pelton completed the pass on lap 17 and never looked back, sweeping the division.
Alec Brown kicked his day off with a heat win in the Kennebec Equipment Rental Thunder 4 Minis, but it was Kyle Willette that got a big jump on the field in the 20-lap feature. Willette held off his car owner and best friend Zach Audet in the closing laps of the race, picking up his first victory of the season. Alec Brown followed, completing the podium.
Noah Haggett won his qualifying heat race and kept the momentum rolling, powering to the early lead in the 30-lap feature for the Gosline Insurance Group Super Streets. He maintained command through numerous cautions and was able to fend off Dan McKeage, Jr. as the laps wound down, scoring the victory. Billy Harnish rounded out the top 3.
Emmett Walker pulled out to a measurable early lead in the 25-lap feature for the Brackett’s Market 4-Cylinder Pros but took a spin while he was leading on lap 6, resulting in Brody Picard taking over the top spot. Unfortunately for Picard, it didn’t last too long as he went around as well, collecting Brady Romano and Jay Plummer in turn 2. Chassidy Shorty took off with a slight advantage on the restart and held her ground through multiple restarts, becoming the first multi-time winner in the division this season. Adam Taylor and Max Parlin followed, completing the podium.
After rebuilding the #11b machine over the past month, Matt Beers had a strong showing in the Norm’s Used Cars Pro Stocks, kicking off the day with a heat victory and securing the early lead in the feature. Following a lot of early-race chaos, Matt Beers and Logan Melcher squared up on a restart and went door-to-door until Melcher pulled ahead with the advantage on lap 8. The field remained strung-out until the closing laps of the race, where Nick Hinkley pulled to Matt Beers’ outside door with just two laps to go, overtaking the runner-up spot. Beers battled it out for third with Kevin Douglass on the closing lap of the race and neither driver let up an inch. They came to the finish line door-to-door, with Douglass securing the spot by just .033 seconds at the line.
It was a momentous win for Logan Melcher, to say the least. Following a disastrous ending to his last Pro Stock Race, Logan and team also had to rebuild their #41 machine after making heavy contact with the backstretch wall. They arrived at the track on Friday afternoon to test the car, but the engine had other plans in mind. The team worked tirelessly through the night to swap the engine out, which they completed just hours before arriving at the track on Saturday. It was quite the whirlwind for Melcher and team, who went from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs in a matter of 24 hours.
The night concluded with the first 100-lap Enduro race of the season. An impressive 36 drivers packed the field and only three drivers completed all 100 laps: Joshua Thurlow, Keith Russell and Irving Doughty. Thurlow was disqualified following the race due to his car having illegal tires and Keith Russell was awarded with the win.
It was surely an action-packed night at Wiscasset Speedway, but there’s still more fun to come as the track hosts their next Group 2 program on Saturday, July 19. The green flag flies at 5 p.m.
