'Mad Hatters' tea party planned at Wiscasset Public Library
The Wiscasset Public Library is hosting a "Mad Hatter" tea party Wednesday, Aug. 12, on the lawn outside the Used Book Room from 1-3 p.m. The event is organized by the newly revitalized group Friends of the Library to thank members for their work in support of the library in the last two years, and to recognize the ongoing efforts of the Garden Club of Wiscasset, which has planned, executed and maintains several gardens on the Library property.
Tea, lemonade and delicious treats will be served. Funny hats can be worn to celebrate the occasion, but are not required. The public is invited to join the party, tour the Used Book Room, and learn about library activities.
The Friends took a year and a half off to regroup in 2012 and 2013. In the fall of 2013 they held a lunch at Marianmade Farm in Wiscasset and invited former and prospective members as guests. It was well attended, and most signed up or renewed their membership.
In the fall of 2014, the Friends hosted a successful "Bands for Books" fundraising concert and silent auction at Marianmade Farm. A repeat event is scheduled for Sept. 20, with Opus One Big Band again performing.
The funds raised are being used, among other things, to refurbish the Used Book Room. Last winter a new heat pump was installed which heats, cools and dehumidifies the room, making it a much more pleasant place to browse for used books. New shelving and carpeting are planned for this space in the coming months.
The Mad Hatters tea party is a way to thank those who have worked so hard in the last few years, and also fulfills one of the Friends' goals, which is to make volunteering with the Friends a fun activity. So take a few minutes from your day and join in the fun.
In case of rain, the event will be held on Aug. 19 from 1-3 p.m.
