Maeve Carlson wins Hood Scholarship
Maeve Carlson of Wiscasset is one of three Maine recipients of the $5,000 Hood Sportsmanship Scholarship.
Carlson is among 18 high school seniors across New England (three from each New England state) selected by the scholarship program.
During a May 16 ceremony at the TD Garden in Boston, former Bruins player Gord Kluzak spoke to the recipients about the importance of sportsmanship. Vice President of Hood Jeff Kanab presented each student with a $5,000 check.
The Maine winners, including Carlson, Emily Levasseur of Monmouth and Jamie Gaughan of West Baldwin, along with the other honorees, will also be recognized with a special display inside the country’s only Sportsmanship Exhibit, which is housed at The Sports Museum at the TD Garden.
Ten finalists in each state determined by a general public vote, which was followed by in-person interviews by a panel of judges who identified the top three in each state. This year, Wiscasset had two students reach the finalist stage: Carlson and Kayla Gordon.
In the program’s sixth year, HP Hood received more than 2,600 entries.
“During my time with the Bruins I learned that sportsmanship is something that defines an athlete,” Kluzak said. “I always put respect and integrity above the desire to win, as hard as that sometimes can be. “The Sportsmanship Scholarship seeks out athletes that instill these qualities at a young age and rewards them for it, which is why I am so proud to be part of this program.”
