Marine art exhibit
The J. Russell Jinishian-selected exhibit at the Maine Art Gallery opened August 23 to an appreciative crowd of marine-art lovers. Entries to this exhibit came in from all over the state for a chance to be critiqued by the world’s leading expert on marine art. The exhibit represented painting, photography, sculpture – from the traditional half hull to contemporary, and found-flotsam-fiber art. The juror’s choice went to Carlton Plummer American Watercolor Society, an artist who is among the longtime exhibitors at the gallery for his watercolor and acrylic painting “Surf Glow.” This is the type of scene that Carlton has become famous for moody and dramatic crashing Maine coast surf, rendered with consummate confidence by a master of the media and of a geographic area. Plummer is celebrating his 50th year of exhibiting and is still exploring new media with great enthusiasm.
Other noteworthy art includes two beautifully rendered works by Sarah Greenier, of Bath, and the brother-sister sculptures by Cynthia and Chrystopher Smith. If you love the coast of Maine, don’t miss this quintessential Maine art show.
In the upstairs gallery, running concurrently is the solo exhibit of works by Tony van Hasselt runs through September 16 at the Maine Art Gallery, corner of Hodge and Warren Streets in the village of Wiscasset. It will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
