Meeting slated for pay-per-bag discussion
Pay-per-bag, something new coming to Woolwich, will be discussed at some place old and familiar — the Nequasset Meetinghouse.
David King Sr., selectmen’s chairman, said the informational meeting at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 21, would be to clear up any confusion concerning the program that kicks off the second week of August. The selectmen hope holding the meeting in the historic building located across from the town office at 13 Nequasset Road will attract a sizable crowd.
The selectmen signed off on a contract with WasteZero when they met Monday evening following a workshop held earlier with members of the solid waste and recycling committee.
King said WasteZero hopes to have bags for non-recyclable trash available for residents to buy by the first of August. The target date for beginning the new service is now Aug. 15.
The bags will be sold for $2 per 30-gallon bag, and $1 per 15-gallon bag. Receipts from the bag sales are shared between WasteZero and the town. WasteZero hopes to sell its bags, at Shaw’s Supermarket in Bath and Wiscasset, Cumberland Farms, Ames TrueValue, Roger’s Hardware and at the town office.
Monies generated from bag sales will be earmarked for tipping fees and other waste disposal costs.
WasteZero’s estimated the town could realize a 40 percent reduction in its non-recyclable trash saving the town approximately $32,500 in tipping fees.
