Morris Farm’s buyer seeks next buyer
Morris Farm's new owner, Maine Farmland Trust (MFT), is looking for a qualified farm buyer to buy Morris Farm, or enter into a short-term lease that would lead to the purchase of the farm. MFT’s goal is to have Morris Farm in active agricultural use within the next year and to transfer ownership within one to four years.
Maine Farmland Trust is accepting proposals through Sept. 2, and will host an open house at the farm (156 Gardiner Road, Wiscasset) July 22 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to allow potential buyers to see the property. To RSVP, contact Brett Sykes at brett@mainefarmlandtrust.org or (207) 338-6575.
The sale of the approximately 48-acre farm is part of Maine Farmland Trust’s Buy/Protect/Sell program, through which MFT buys farms and farmland that are vulnerable to non-farm development, arranges to protect the property with an agricultural conservation easement, and sells it to a farmer at a price that reflects the value as farmland.
Morris Farm was owned by Morris Farm Trust for over 30 years and operated as a non-profit educational farm with a variety of community programs. The 30-year restrictive covenant on the farm was set to expire in 2025 and Morris Farm Trust was no longer able to operate the farm. With the encouragement of Morris Farm Trust, Maine Farmland Trust bought the farm property earlier this year to keep the farm in agriculture.
