Newcastle town meeting moved
The Newcastle town meeting has been moved from the Lincoln Academy gym to the dining commons, due to gym renovations.
The meeting will still begin at 7 p.m. Monday, June 15.
Newcastle voters will be asked to approve municipal budgets to run the day-to-day operation of the town, as well as pass several other articles that could change the way Newcastle conducts business.
In something of a rarity, the Newcastle board of selectmen and budget committee disagree about several facets of the budget. For the general government line, the selectmen have proposed a budget of $242,000, which would include a full-time Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy, while the budget committee’s proposed budget would not have the position and instead would be $207,000, which would still be an increase over the 2014-15 budget of $204,000.
The two sides also disagree when it comes to fringe benefits for town employees: The selectmen want an increase in benefits to bring the total to $57,000 against the budget committee’s recommendation of $45,700.
Voters will also vote on the roads department less than a week after Damariscotta voters nearly ended the interlocal agreement between the two towns.
Voters will also be tasked with either approving or denying an ordinance change that would change how people register their moorings. Instead of both Damariscotta and Newcastle separately issuing mooring and shellfish permits, the tasks would be split-up. Damariscotta voters approved the new agreement, which means all shellfish licenses must be obtained in Damariscotta while all mooring permits must be obtained in Newcastle, should the voters approve it.
Costs for moorings will also be increasing pending an approval, to $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. Part of the increased cost will be used to add a position to help enforce the mooring registrations.
The public meeting is open to the public, but voting is restricted to Newcastle residents.
