UPDATE: In a special town meeting December 5, Palermo residents voted to withdraw from RSU 12. 

The same cost sharing plan that decreased Wiscasset and Westport Island's costs to RSU 12 increased Palermo’s contribution. This increase has sparked a petition and a special town meeting. During that December 5 meeting, voters will be asked whether to appropriate $15,000 to develop a withdrawal agreement from RSU 12.

The petition was presented to the Palermo Selectmen on November 15, with 86 signatures, according to the Palermo town clerk.

Westport Island and Wiscasset voters already have voted to begin the withdrawal process, with the withdrawal committees from both towns submitting a withdrawal agreement to RSU 12.

The towns currently in RSU 12 include: Alna, Chelsea, Somerville, Whitefield, Windsor, Wiscasset, Westport Island and Palermo.
