Pumpkinfest powers across the finish line
When the first Damariscotta Pumpkinfest regatta was held 11 years ago, it was less regatta and more squash-scented mayhem on the river.
Eleven years after founders Buzz Pinkham and Bill Clark introduced the Midcoast to pumpkin mayhem, the event featured more than 12,000 spectators, and pumpkins powered by up to 25-horsepower outboard engines.
Like Edwin Pierpont's state record-setting pumpkins, things have grown in Damariscotta.
The final event in the ninth annual Pumpkinfest was the running of the 11th annual regatta.
And with the regatta people dressed as vikings, flags and luau enthusiasts took to the cold waters of the Damariscotta River.
The pumpkin regatta took off Monday, Oct. 12, and featured new costumes and designs but some familiar faces.
Pumpkin pilot Christian Rioux again took home the top spot for the motorized pumpkins — this year he lapped the competition several times in his 25-horsepower pumpkin.
Rioux was also sporting a Boothbay Register/Wiscasset Newspaper GoPro camera, which caught his victory in first-person view.
Returning for another year and paddling to another title was Boston's Tim Smith, who took home the top spot for individual racing after missing out on the title a year ago.
Also winning this year was the tag-team of Dale Hart and Sarah Witty, who grew their boat and came from behind to overtake perennial pumpkin powerhouses JaJa Martin and Robert Watts, who were paddling around in an over-sized Yoda boat. Last year, Witty and Hart lost to Martin and Watts in the final.
