“Looks like it did what it’s supposed to,” VHB’s Chris Bobay called out to railway and other crews at the Main Street, Wiscasset crossing Wednesday morning, Feb. 26, after the tracks’ warning sounds and lights ran and traffic stopped and resumed. The Massachusetts engineering firm, a Maine Department of Transportation contractor on the downtown project, joined MDOT, Pratt Railway Services and Central Maine and Quebec Railway for the testing.

CMQR runs freight on the line. “We have to make certain that we clear the tracks for any incoming train ... That’s really the last phase of getting this (downtown signal system) to go from flashing to live colors, 24/7, 365,” Bobay said at the corner of Main and Water streets. There, crews had the signal controls cabinet open.

The whole system may go live on or before April 1, Bobay said. The system’s integration with the railroad crossing was the last piece, he explained.

“Testing has been completed and all indications are it was successful. There is still a review of the operations ... to be completed by the end of this week,” Bobay wrote in texts later.

The signal testing was announced for Feb. 26 and 28, but was finished Feb. 26, MDOT spokesman Paul Merrill said Feb. 27.
