Richard A. Smith, 79, a longtime summer resident of Boothbay Harbor, died Friday, Nov. 30 in Annandale, Va.  He grew up in Newington, Conn. and held a B.A. degree from Yale University and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Finance.  Dick Smith came to Boothbay Harbor in the summer of 1962 after marriage to his wife, Barbara, and the two had a cottage in Sprucewold.

A specialist in marketing and business development, Dick worked for The Stanley Works in New Britain, Conn., Harbridge House in Boston, Mass., Westinghouse Airbrake in Pittsburgh, Pa., ITT Grinnell in Providence, R.I., and Ameron Corp., in Monterey Park, Calif.  Dick was also a tenor soloist in many churches, and occasionally sang in the summers at churches in Boothbay Harbor where his wife Barbara was a substitute organist.

Dick was a longtime and active member of the Sprucewold Association and a past president of that organization.  He and Barbara are particularly remembered for establishing Nahanada Park in Sprucewold.  In late 1999, the two bought the former Lodge pool, then a derelict eyesore in the center of Sprucewold, and solicited and received from the Sprucewold community funds to turn the area into a park of grass, shrubs and trees.  In the summer of 2000, Dick and Barbara gave the park to the Sprucewold Association.

Dick is survived by his daughter, Susan Jaskot of Burke, Va. and Boothbay Harbor; his son, Daniel Smith of Jericho, Vt. and Boothbay Harbor; one brother, Lewis F.H. Smith of Wilmington, N.C., and three grandchildren.  His wife Barbara predeceased him in 2003.

A funeral will be held at the Church of Christ, Congregational, Newington, Conn., the church of Dick's youth, and where he and Barbara were married. To share a memory with his family, visit www.newingtonmemorial.com.
