Sally Loughridge shows original Maine artwork
A year-round South Bristol resident, Sally Loughridge has a selection of expressive oil paintings at Lincoln Hospital (35 Miles St., Damariscotta), formerly Miles Hospital, during September and October 2025.
She has had a variety of roles in medical settings over the years: initially as a psychologist in the University of Vermont Psychiatry Department, next as a young mother, then as a hospital patient during her own health challenges, and finally as a volunteer. She has written and illustrated two books that focus on coping with health problems: "Rad Art" and "Daniel and His Starry Night Blanket."
Throughout her life, she has been an artist with a love of and respect for nature. As a child, Louridge was encouraged by her mother to create all she could, be they pots from backyard clay, collages from magazines, new clothes from old ones, or paintings of the world around. Her paintings reflect her emotional resonance with our state’s unique land and sea scapes.
Painting primarily in oil andplein air whenever possible, Loughridge is sensitive to the beauty of Maine’s unique Midcoast – its distinct light, sudden shifts in weather, dark sky, and seasonal changes. She is particularly drawn to intersection of the natural elements and contrasts of light and shadow, whether dramatic or subtle.
Her art education is a patchwork of classes and workshops woven together by her keen observational skill and emotional response to light, shape, and color. She has long admired the Impressionists and the Canadian Group of Seven artists.
Loughridge shows regularly at Pemaquid Art Gallery, Archipelago at Rockland’s Island Institute, and 165, the Inn on Park Row in Brunswick, as well as in area solo, invitational, and group shows. In this show, a portion of the sale price will benefit the Miles Memorial Hospital League.
