Scot MacKenzie Goodwin, 60, of Gardiner passed away peacefully, March 1, 2022, after a courageous battle with early onset Alzheimer’s disease, at Togus Springs Hospice in Augusta, Maine. He is in his forever home with the Lord.

Scot was born Jan. 28, 1962 in Hampton, Virginia at Langley Air Force Base hospital. Growing up in a career military family, Scot lived in many places during his youth. He and his siblings resided in Virginia, Connecticut, South Carolina, Guam, Washington state, and California. One of his fondest childhood memories was trout fishing with his father, brother and sister at Symington Lake in Bremerton, Washington.

Scot graduated from Hilltop High School in Chula Vista, California. He enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps soon after graduation and served in the Marine Wing as an avionics technician. He was honorably discharged in 1983, and then returned to southern California and lived near San Diego.

Later, Scot moved to Maine to live closer to his father in Boothbay Harbor and later Portland. He developed a close relationship with his half-brother Sam Underwood, where they spent a lot of time playing and sharing stories. While in Portland, Scot graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in history, and a master’s of science in special education from the University of Southern Maine, Portland. During Scot’s career as a special education teacher, he helped so many children of all ages. He started a history club for the students, who would get up very early before school, to be part of this program. It was in Maine where Scot met Heidi,
and they married in 2004. He was a devoted husband and Christian who was always willing to grow in faith and love.

Scot was an avid cyclist, who traveled many miles over the roads and trails of Maine. He also enjoyed hiking, canoeing, and walking with Heidi and his clan of dogs, Ziggy, Rudi and Sophie.

Scot was a passionate reader, and loved history. He was also a poet and author of several stories published in the Maine Scholar and The Southern Maine Review.

Scot was a sports fan, particularly the former San Diego Chargers and the San Diego Padres.

He was a member in good standing with Alcoholics Anonymous for over 25 years. Scot’s sense of humor, kindness and inclusiveness to all was a true gift to anyone who knew him. Whatever Scot did, he put his whole heart into it with great enthusiasm and joy. He will be greatly missed.

Scot was predeceased by his mother Barbara Daffron of La Quinta, California and his younger brother Mark Goodwin (A. J. Redwine) of Lemon Grove, California.

He is survived by his loving wife Heidi of Gardiner, his father George Goodwin of Boothbay, his sister Gwen Goodwin (Rebecca Goodwin) of Indio, California, his brother Sam Underwood of Arlington, Virginia, and his nieces Haley Goodwin and Hannah Goodwin. Much heartfelt thanks to the team at Togus Springs Hospice for helping us through this difficult journey, giving Scot the compassion, respect and superb care that he required.

A gathering will be at Staples Funeral Home, 153 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner, on Saturday, March 19, with visitation from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and memorial service at 2:30 pm. A ceremony and burial will be at the Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 143 Blue Star Avenue, Augusta, ME on Thursday, June 16 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Scot’s name may be made to The Alzheimer’s Care Center, Adult Day Program, 154 Dresden Avenue, Gardiner, ME 04345 or Pathway Vineyard Church, P.O.
