Westport Island selectmen nominated Ruth Nelson as the volunteer who will receive the Spirit of America Tribute at their meeting Monday evening. The selectmen received three nominations for the honor. However, after a review of the other nominations, the selectmen choose Nelson for this year’s recipient.

First Selectman George Richardson said, “We have so many volunteers on the Island, it is really difficult to select just one.”

Town Clerk Gaye Wagner placed Nelson in nomination for the honor because she is currently the chairman of the planning board, treasurer of the Westport Community Center, and a member of the ad hoc history committee. Nelson also helped edit the Cora Tarbox’s history of the town; wrote the grant for the jetty; has re-written several of the town ordinances to bring them in compliance with local, state and federal guidelines; and she volunteers whenever and wherever she is needed.

The Spirit of America Foundation Tribute is presented in the name of Maine municipalities to local individuals, organizations and projects for commendable community service. This year's awards will be presented at the Lincoln County Communications Conference room, November 20, at 11 a.m.

Spirit of America Foundation is a nonprofit established in Augusta in 1990 to honor volunteerism.

MacNamara abatement

The selectmen approved abatement for the Robert MacNamara Foundation decreasing the value of the property by about $400,000.

The abatement is the result of an inspection of the property by Maine Certified Assessor Gene Huskins. A check will be sent to the foundation in the amount of $3,724.

The town had previously assessed the property as Triple A. After being inspected, Huskins lowered the status to Double A, thus decreasing the value and the amount of taxes.

Road committee

The selectmen approved the Maintenance and Improvement plan that has been agreed upon by the newly appointed ad hoc Road Committee.

The appointment of a road committee was recommended by resident E. Davies Allan several months ago. Allan was also appointed to the committee along with James Cromwell, Road Commissioner Garry Cromwell, Andrew Bradford, and Roger Higgins.

Meeting canceled

There will be no selectmen’s meeting Monday, Nov. 12, due to the Veterans Day holiday. The next Westport Island selectmen’s meeting
