Seniors recognized at class night

Wed, 06/05/2019 - 10:45am

On Tuesday night, the Wiscasset Middle High School senior class gathered to be recognized for one of the last times before graduation.

Many smiles were present throughout the night as seniors were shown recognition for all of the hard work they have put in during their time at the school. Many staff members reflected on the class, many saying how proud they are of the students and that they know the students will all go off to do amazing things. Principal Charles Lomonte said they are a wonderful group of students and it has been his pleasure to work with them for his first year there, and they will all be missed.

Student Council President and class co-president Matthew Chapman opened the ceremony by thanking all who have supported his class throughout the years, and he reminisced on the great time he and his classmates have had together. Alecia Baker gave a heartfelt speech about how it was not until she arrived to Wiscasset that she found acceptance among her peers. She thanked all of her teachers, saying the staff at Wiscasset has guided her and taught her how to trust others.

Many awards were given throughout the night, recognizing each student for different abilities. Many students got awards for being strong and kind citizens, and for showing great leadership. While this night was to reward students, it was also a night for friends and family to reflect on all of the great times the class of 2019 has had together. Co-president Sydnie Thayer worked hard for months to put together a final slideshow for her peers that would allow both students and families to reflect on the time the students spent together. During this time a lot of laughter was shared, and a few happy tears.

Scholarships were handed out towards the end of the night to help support students in their future endeavors. Among the scholarships were the Senator George Mitchell Scholarship, presented to Chapman. The MELMAC Foundation Scholarship, presented to Megan DeLong, the William A. Cumming Scholarship Foundation Award, to Thayer, and the ME Blue Collar Scholarship Foundation Award, presented to Matt Smith. Many other scholarships were awarded, and including many by the Wiscasset General Scholarship Fund.

Graduation is Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m.
