St. Philip’s gets new ‘priest in charge’
St. Philip's Episcopal Church, Wiscasset, is pleased to announce the Reverend Suzanne F. Colburn has accepted a call to serve as part-time Priest In Charge. St. Philip's is excited at the prospect of having such an experienced leader.
Rev. Colburn has a rich and varied educational and work history. Hailing from New York City, Colburn attended Parsons School of Design. After a brief career as an illustrator, she moved to Boston to pursue further art-related activities, but sensing a greater calling, she chose to attend Bowdoin College, graduating Summa Cum Laude with an AB in Religion, followed by completing a Master of Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School then going on to earn a MDiv at Episcopal Divinity School, all preparing her for ordination to the Transitional Deaconate and, ultimately, to the Episcopal Priesthood.
Colburn's ministerial career has been as exciting, diverse and wonderful as her educational career. Following ordination, she was named Associate Rector at Emmanuel Church in Boston and appointed Dean of the Boston Harbor Deanery.
Called to Maine, Rev. Colburn served as Priest-in-Charge, first of St, Columba's in Boothbay Harbor, then Christ Church in Biddeford.
Returning to Massachusetts, Colburn trained in Interim Ministry skills that served her well at St. John's in Beverly Farms, Parish of the Messiah in Auburndale, Christ Church in Needham and St. Paul's in Lynnfield, but Maine continued to call, pulling her north once again to work as Interim Priest at St. Thomas' Episcopal Church in Camden. She more recently tackled the challenge of combining Augusta's St. Mark's Episcopal and Prince of Peace Lutheran churches to become Emanuel Lutheran Episcopal Church where she then served as its Priest-in-Charge until very recently.
Relishing her life of service, Rev. Colburn also participated in the Bishop's Search Committee for the election of Bishop Stephen Lane, as well as serving on several boards including Maine Hospice Council, Seeds of Hope, a Jubilee Center in Maine, and Safe Haven, a women's shelter in Boston.
When she is not serving in ministry, she is often spending time with her beloved family, or on a plane bound for England to visit with her sister and husband. Colburn's other interests include traveling, digging into academic research, walking, gardening, staying abreast of national and global news, as well as frequently experiencing all that New York City has to offer.
While at St. Philip's, Rev. Colburn wil offer priestly support of worship in the Episcopal tradition, the church's cornerstone that calls members to its outreach missions: The Help Yourself Shelf food pantry, serving more than 3,400 households in FY25; the Bargain Basement thrift shop offering affordable good quality clothes and household goods; the Feed Our Scholars program, in partnership with First Congregational Church, providing weekend food to students in need; and Set for Success, offering free school supplies to all Wiscasset students.
St. Philip's warmly welcomes all who wish to explore worship or volunteer opportunities. We are at 12 Hodge St., and can be reached at 207-882-7184; stphilips@wiscasset.net; or St. Philip's Facebook Page
