SVCA upcoming stewardship days
Interested in getting outside as part of Maine Great Outdoor Weekend, and learning about improving wildlife habitat on your property? SVCA will be having a stewardship day at Trout Brook Preserve working on habitat improvement projects, Friday September 25 from 1 to 3 p.m. The northern parcel at Trout Brook was historically old pasture land that is now growing into forest and SVCA is working to maintain early successional tree and shrub habitat for a diversity of wildlife species.
Participants can join in the fun of clearing vegetation, pruning apple trees, building brush piles and learning about wildlife habitat needs. The property is used by nesting woodcock and songbirds in summer, deer, foxes and snowshoe hare. It is a great place to see and hear wildlife throughout the year and a fun place to explore even without trails.
On Wednesday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon, Tish Carr, licensed forester and arborist, will join SVCA staff and volunteers to lead a pruning workshop at SVCA’s Griggs Preserve in Newcastle. tish will share information about the Woolley Edelgid and how to identify and reduce the spread of this invasive insect. Anyone who helps with trails, or has trails and manages a woodlot on their own land will benefit from this event.
If you are interested in hearing more about upcoming projects please contact SVCA’s Programs Manager Lynne Flaccus at lynne@sheepscot.org or call the office 207-586-5616. Watch for upcoming activities and projects on our website www.sheepscot.org or like us on Facebook.
