Sylvia Joyce Norwood (née Snowman), of Southport Island, passed away, May 21, 2023 after a short illness.

She was born on Southport and was welcomed to the world as the third daughter to the Snowman family at Newagen on July 1, 1939.

Her childhood days were filled with love of swimming with friends in the cove near Newagen Harbor.

One of the highlights of her teenage years was an extra in one of the boats in the movie “Carousel” while it was being filmed in the Boothbay region.

Sylvia was a proud member of the first class to ever graduate from the “new” Boothbay Region High School Class of 1956.

Sylvia went on to marry Errol Brown in 1956 and have a family over the next few years. His work took them to many states and even to an overseas assignment to Saudi Arabia for several years. Sylvia worked as well through the years at St. Andrews Hospital as a housekeeper, at the Lawnmeer Inn, and also private cleaning in the summers.

In 1981 she married Norman Norwood and they enjoyed life on Southport for many years.

She was an avid reader throughout her life and always a lover of puzzles and had one in progress always.

Summer days she enjoyed her fish pond while reading in the sun on long afternoons.

She always looked forward to a visit from her granddaughter Megan, as they shared a special bond.

Sylvia is survived by her two sisters and a brother, Beverly Tibbetts, Linda Dowling and Gary Snowman; her children, Deborah Gray and Randal (wife Margaret) Brown; grandchildren Chad Reed and his partner Keri Roberts, Megan (husband Michael) Williams, Christine Brown, Misty Brown, Andrew Brown; great-grandchildren Colt Reed, Molly Reed, Ashli Frost, Alisa (husband Will) George; and great-great-grandson Karter George.

She was predeceased by her parents Leland and Lucy Snowman, her sister Nancy Hurst, and her loving grandson Derek Reed.

Her family would like to thank the staff at Cove’s Edge for their compassion, kindness and support.

A family celebration of life will be held later this fall.
