Talk on German POWs in Maine
Hank Lunn will give a public talk at The Lincoln Home in Newcastle on how German prisoners of war in Maine transformed from foe to friend. The talk will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 28.
In 1944, the U.S. Army Air Base in Houlton became the site of a POW internment camp for German soldiers captured in North Africa and France. Hank Lunn's father requested prisoners to help with the potato harvest. Lunn will share the personal story, "From Foe to Friend," of what the experience was like to have German soldiers working on his family farm in nearby Littleton.
The Lincoln Home is located at 22 River Road, overlooking the Damariscotta River, in Newcastle. For more information, please contact Rhonda Hanna, director of community life, at 207-563-3350.
