Thanksgivings

Wed, 05/23/2018 - 6:00pm

Entering late May, we are midway between Thanksgiving Day 2017 and 2018. So, a little like Christmas in July, here are some things to be thankful for:

–To American Legion Post 54 for planning to put up American flags in town again this year. The sight of Old Glory never gets old. However, Commander William Cossette Jr. tells us the post could use donations toward maintaining the displays. The weather has taken a toll, he said.

–To the family of Sara Estrella, for enabling her to be a new cyclist at 25, and for their reaching out to offer us all some inspiration.

As noted here before, some of the best stories we get to tell stem from a call or email we receive.

Keep them coming, truly. One of my favorite parts of the Mary Tyler Moore Show was its opening theme: "Who can take a nothing day, and suddenly make it all seem worthwhile?" You, so thank you.

–To all our contributors who along  with our staff reporters help us cover the towns, from the fun to the most serious news, and the story Phil Di Vece tracked this week, on the Woolwich tunnel mural that could.

They put you there, everywhere, as much as possible. So do our columnists, on the community side, from who has just visited where, to who is new in town. On Westport Island, we've been fortunate to have Pat Smith doing it about two years. In a loss to us, Pat is letting go of those reins. We hope we find another islander to pick them up. If you think that might be you, call me at 844-4633 or email news@wiscassetnewspaper.com

–Thank you to the authorities who get us information on breaking and developing stories as soon as they’re able; and thanks, online readers and those who visit our Facebook page or get our free emails that help spread the word, as in recent instances of Maine Department of Public Safety’s Silver Alerts.

Untii the real Thanksgiving, let’s keep looking for the everyday things to be thankful for, and celebrate them.
