HARBOR THEATER

185 Townsend Ave., Boothbay Harbor ~ 633-0438 ~ www.boothbaycinema.org

“The Irishman” - (Rated R, 3 hours, 30 minutes) - A crime thriller with all the usual colorful character: Robert DeNiro plays Frank Sheehan, an older mobster who reminisces about his years working for the Buffalino crime family and considers his involvement with his good friend. Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino), who disappeared in 1975. Joe Pesci is the soft-spoken Russell Buffalino and Anna Paquin is Sheehan’s daughter. Final screenings at 7 p.m.

The Guardian review of “The Irishman” says it best: “No-one but Scorsese and this glorious cast could have made this movie live as richly and compellingly as it does, and persuade us that its tropes and images are still vital. We have ample opportunity to tire of the mob, the politicians, Florida and so on. But Scorsese brings it back into a scalpel-sharp focus, especially with a new emphasis on Frank’s spiritual devastation and guilt: a man who had long ago amputated his ability to feel remorse and now is unable to come to terms with his feelings. Another massive achievement for Scorsese.”

“In Search of Beethoven” - (NR, 2 hours, 18 minutes) - The Great Composers - This globally celebrated film explores a great composer’s life through his work. The music, performed by prominent artists, is intertwined with the composer’s life and letters. Internationally celebrated documentary filmmaker Phil Grabsky travelled the world over several years to film first class performances, and interview musicians and historians of the highest regard. Delving beneath the mythological image, In Search of Beethoven reveals new and endearing insights into this legendary composer. Fifty-five extraordinary performances capture the excellence of an array of world-class artists. Screens Friday, Dec. 6, 2 p.m. Tickets $10 ($8 members).

“Parasite” - (Rated R, 2 hours, 12 minutes) - In Korean with subtitles - Bong Joon Ho brings his work home to Korea in this pitch-black modern fairytale. Meet the Park Family: the picture of aspirational wealth. And the Kim Family, rich in street smarts but not much else. Be it chance or fate, these two houses are brought together and the Kims sense a golden opportunity. Masterminded by college-aged Ki-woo, the Kim children expediently install themselves as tutor and art therapist, to the Parks.

Soon, a symbiotic relationship forms between the two families. The Kims provide "indispensable" luxury services while the Parks obliviously bankroll their entire household. When a parasitic interloper threatens the Kims' newfound comfort, a savage, underhanded battle for dominance breaks out, threatening to destroy the fragile ecosystem between the Kims and the Parks. Playing at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6; Saturday, Dec. 7; Wednesday, Dec. 11; and Thursday, Dec. 12; and Sunday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m.

“Parasite is at once a comedy and a Hitchcockian thriller with shades of mid-period Cohen Bros thrown in for good ironic measure. This film is a solid must-see for anyone who values quality film-making with something to say.” - Chris McCoy, Memphis Flyer
