Twin Villages’ town meetings upcoming
Polls open across the Twin Villages next week as Newcastle and Damariscotta decide who will lead the towns for the next year.
Closed town meetings will be held for both towns with the opening of the polls Tuesday, June 9 at 8 a.m., and closing 8 p.m. the same day.
Damariscotta voters will be asked to vote in two selectmen: Robin Mayer is running for reelection, while Josh Pinkham is the only candidate on the ballot to take over the remainder of former selectman David Atwater's term, which is one year.
Voters will also have to write in a candidate for the school board, and William Brewer is the only name on the ballot for the lone open spot on the sanitary district.
Damariscotta voters will be asked to approve a proposed general government budget of $682,000; a public safety budget of $774,000; a public works department budget of $362,000 and $138,000 to be spent towards debt service.
Damariscotta will also see an up-tick in the county tax assessment to $439,000.
The open town meeting will be at the Lincoln Theater at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10.
In this years series of town meetings, voters will be asked whether they will amend the town's bylaws to allow one town manage the shellfish ordinances, while the other be be in control of all harbor ordinances.
Annual reports for Damariscotta are available at the town office on School Street, which is also where the closed ballot election will be June 9.
Newcastle too will have its secret ballot election on Tuesday, June 9, but will have its open town meeting the following week on Monday, June 15.
On Newcastle's secret ballot there are three races and five positions, but only three candidates. Incumbent selectman Christopher Doherty is running for reelection to board of selectmen, and the second candidate with have to be a write-in, as no one else took out papers for the second open board of selectmen seat.
Allan Ray is the only candidate for the Great Salt Bay Sanitary District trustee, where there are two vacancies, and Joshua Jacobs is the only candidate for the lone open seat on the school board.
The Newcastle open town meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Lincoln Academy, and residents will be asked to approve or deny budgets, including two separate proposed budgets for the town government.
Newcastle's selectmen have proposed a budget of $242,000, which would include a full-time deputy, while the budget committee’s proposed budget would not have a full-time deputy and would have a budget of $207,000.
The Newcastle government budget was $204,000 in 2014-15.
The selectmen and budget committee also vary when it comes to fringe benefits for town employees, as the selectmen propose and increase in health insurance to bring the benefits total to $57,000 while the budget committee recommends a lesser amount for a budget of $45,700.
Newcastle will also ask voters to approve $109,500 for the interlocal agreement, which oversees the roads and road projects. Voters will also be asked to approve $292,000 for the public works department and $100,000 for the capital roads project.
Voters will also be asked to approve $249,100 in debt services.
