Two Morris Farm workers win new stove
Maine Coast Stove & Chimney is pleased to announce that Greta Huff, an AmeriCorps Vista volunteer, and Hannah Court, a first-year resident farmer at Morris Farm, have been selected as recipients of a new Pacific Energy Vista wood stove.
The Wiscasset business received a number of applications from area residents recommending candidates who go above and beyond in providing support to friends and neighbors on the Midcoast.
The two were chosen for their dedication to providing access for local people to affordable, nutritious food and for toiling under the hot summer sun and in the frigid dawn of a winter’s day to provide fresh quality meats and vegetables.
As a second-year VISTA member, Greta has been instrumental in establishing an annual forum for all the different groups working on food access and food security in Lincoln County. She participates in a group that represents local food pantries, has secured an EBT card capacity for the Morris Farm so that people with SNAP benefits can access locally grown, healthy food and has organized cooking classes to help people learn how to find, cook and store good food.
As a first-year resident farmer at Morris Farm, Hannah has established a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) business. She rents some land, barn space and equipment from Morris Farm, growing vegetables and raising pigs and chickens. She is a MOFGA journeyperson, which enables her to get advice on establishing her farming practice. Hannah is one of a number of young farmers who have planted roots in Lincoln County. In doing so, they are providing the rest of us with access to fresh, locally raised food, rather than bland, imported and likely genetically altered or pesticide laden food.
Greta and Hannah share the old farmhouse at Morris Farm and plan on using the new stove to ward off the intruding cold that tends to creep through the structure like mice in a hay pile.
