Volunteers needed for Kennebec Estuary study
Volunteer water quality monitors are needed to help us learn about our important coastal waters in Phippsburg and Georgetown. The Kennebec Estuary Land Trust is partnering with the Town of Phippsburg and the Town of Georgetown to focus on water in the Kennebec Estuary. Volunteers will take part in monitoring for salinity, temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and nitrogen in coastal waters from sites along the shore.
Every other week, from June through October, volunteers are needed to collect water samples at sites in either Phippsburg or Georgetown. Each volunteer would be responsible for one or two sites. Sampling will take place around noon on Mondays in Georgetown and Tuesdays in Phippsburg and will last for 1-2 hours. A training for all new volunteers will be held on Saturday, May 31, at 10:30 a.m. at the Phippsburg Town Office.
The results of the water sampling this year will be shared with town conservation commissions and shellfish committees so it can serve as a tool to help our communities understand and manage the valuable water resources in our region.
