Walkers shine a little light on Wiscasset

Residents gathered downtown with LED lights to enjoy the season’s last Walk Around Wiscasset on Thursday night, Sept. 24. The monthly events were an occasion for friends and neighbors to safely gather and enjoy one another’s company.

Lucia Droby told Wiscasset Newspaper it’s been fun coordinating the Walk Arounds. She was wearing a colorful headscarf, a mask and carrying a small lantern in each hand. Like so many, she said she’s looking forward to next year and hopefully the return of the Wiscasset Art Walk.

“With the construction finally over, this was going to be the summer we showcased our beautiful new downtown with the art walks. Everyone was so disappointed when we weren’t able to hold them because of the pandemic. Rather than do nothing, I came up with the idea of holding the Walk Arounds. Something we could do that was safe and still get people to come downtown, walk around and see how wonderful everything looks now that the work is finished.”

Brad Sevaldson, decked out in a bright red bow tie and matching cummerbund, was in full agreement. “We all miss the Art Walks but these have been fun, too. It’s just so nice to see people enjoying themselves.”

When Wiscasset Newspaper arrived at dusk, most attendees were gathered in front of BIRCH, the gift shop Sevaldson and his partner Greg Uthoff operate. “We’re really very, very happy with the way the downtown project turned out. We love it,” added Sevaldson.

Droby said the best attended Walk Around was last month’s, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, the one granting women the right to vote. Many wore white and costumes.

“We’re of course all looking forward to next summer and the return of the Art Walks. The new Main Street sidewalks now being so much wider will enable us to do much more,” added Droby. While the weather is nice, Droby suggested taking a stroll downtown.
