Watch out for latest telephone scam
On January 10, Detective Robert M. McFetridge of the Criminal Investigation Division received a call from a resident of Boothbay who reported that she had received a scam call.
The caller stated they were from AARP and were sending this person a new AARP card. The caller asked verifying information such as telephone number and address.
The caller next asked her for her banking information again stating that it was needed for verification. When questioned about why AARP would need such information, the caller became very insistent that they had to have it.
When my complainant finally named her bank, the caller said, “I am going to read to you the first set of numbers from your account. I will then need you to read me the second set of numbers.”
When McFetridge's complainant pointed out the second set of numbers were in fact the account number and that if the caller had the number in front of them they could read it to her, the caller hung up.
The telephone number that showed up on caller ID appears to be a spoofed number, due to the fact that when it is called back it states it's an invalid number.
Although this is a variation of an old scam, McFetridge had not heard about this one in the area. Lincoln County Sheriff's Office urges read to please pass this on and remind everyone never give out banking information to someone over the phone that you don't know.
