This week at the Harbor Theater
"Hamnet" - (PG13; 2 hours, 5 minutes) - From Academy Award®–winning writer/director Chloé Zhao, "Hamnet" is a deeply felt and beautifully rendered exploration of grief, love, and the enduring power of art. Adapted from Maggie O’Farrell’s acclaimed 2020 novel, the film offers a profound new way of looking at one of the world’s most famous plays by refracting it through the personal life of its author, William Shakespeare, and, especially, his wife Agnes. Thoughtful direction and indelible performances allow the story’s emotional layers to unfold with sensitivity and restraint, revealing how art can express what words alone cannot. The film imagines the early courtship of William (Paul Mescal), then a young Latin tutor, and Agnes Hathaway (Jessie Buckley), an enigmatic and fiercely independent woman whose individuality shapes their family life. When their young son Hamnet dies—a historical fact believed to have inspired Hamlet—Hamnet speculates that Shakespeare’s writing became an act of mourning, a way to process loss and honor his child. Heartbreaking yet luminous, the film breaks hearts and gently mends them, carried by Zhao’s quiet confidence and the astonishing performances at its center. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2 p.m. (OCAP); Thursday, Jan. 22, Friday, Jan. 23, and Saturday, Jan. 24 and Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.; at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 28 (OCAP).
"With strong performances in service to a clear, confident vision from Chloé Zhao, this is a wrenching contemplation of the ‘undiscovered country’ of death and grief.” – John Nugent, Empire Magazine
“There is much else to admire in this beautifully shot, cruelly raw film, but, with some justification, most of the talk will be about the female lead. One can think of few other actors who can so unashamedly access such torrents of simulated emotion.” – Donald Clarke, Irish Times
"Gandhi" - Lunch with the Classics presentation - (1982; PG; 3 hours, 11 minutes) - This acclaimed biographical drama presents major events in the life of Mohandas Gandhi (Ben Kingsley), the beloved Indian leader who stood against British rule over his country. Dedicated to the concept of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi is initially dismissed by English officials, including the influential Lord Irwin (John Gielgud), but eventually he and his cause become internationally renowned, and his gatherings of passive protest move India towards independence. One show Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1 p.m. Themed lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Tickets for the film and lunch: Members - $15; non-members $19. Film only: Members, $8; non-members, $12.
“When every hole has been picked in it, and every disadvantage detailed, the film remains not only a very honorable tribute to one of our beleaguered century's greatest figures, but watchable, moving and certainly Attenborough's best [film].” – Derek Malcolm, Guardian
"Zootopia 2" - Family Film Deal opening night, Jan. 30 - (PG; 1 hour, 47 minutes) - In "Zootopia 2," eager, rule-following bunny Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and streetwise fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), now officially rookie partners in the Zootopia Police Department, meddle in a high-stakes case that prompts Chief Bogo (Idris Elba) to order them to attend partner counseling. Worried that they’ll be separated, Judy becomes fixated on a mysterious clue: snakeskin found at a crime scene, even though snakes haven’t been seen in mammal-dominated Zootopia for decades. Cleverly layering a thoughtful message onto another crackerjack caper while solidifying Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde as one of the most endearing buddy pairings in ages, "Zootopia 2" more than justifies a return trip to the big city. This delightful sequel deepens the themes explored in the first film while introducing new lovable characters and organic plotlines. FAMILY FILM DEAL only on opening night: January 30: Get two FREE admissions (1 adult ticket and 1 child's ticket) and one FREE large popcorn per family. “Zootopia 2 is pure delight, every bit as exciting and heartwarming and imaginative as the Oscar-winning original and maybe even funnier.” – Nell Minow, RogerEbert.com
