Westport Island Column: 11-mile yard sale June 7
Don’t forget to make time next Tuesday, June 10, to vote at the town hall, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voting will take place for State primary elections, town elections, the RSU#12 budget referendum, and the petition to terminate the withdrawal process. You can still pick up an absentee ballot. The last day is tomorrow, Thursday, June 5. Stop by the town office and talk with Town Clerk Gaye Wagner. You can also vote absentee during regular town office hours on Thursday. If you’ve picked up an absentee ballot, it needs to be returned by the close of polls on Tuesday, June 10 by 8 p.m.
Our very young scholars can play safely in pools, ponds, and lakes this summer, but they could use your help. This Friday night, June 6, the Primary School’s Partners in Education is holding its annual Italian Dinner and Auction from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the school to raise funds for swimming lessons for over 120 1st-3rd graders. I don’t know where you learned to swim, but my brother and sisters and I hopped on a bus in the summer to go to Red Cross-sponsored lessons at the Town “pond.” It was fun to splash through classes with neighbors, and all we had to worry about was not losing our nickel for candy.
Tickets for the home-made spaghetti/baked ziti/salad/bread/dessert dinner are $5 each or $20 for a family. Plus the many “themed” baskets to be auctioned off include gifts or gift certificates for family nights out, grilling, pet lovers, movie nights, gardening, Legos and many more. Contact Jen McKane at jmckane@roadrunner.com, or Abby Seiders, abby_127@hotmail.com to learn more.
After carbo-loading at the Primary School on Friday night, Saturday, June 7, will be a busy day in town for fearless shoppers and island explorers. The 11-mile yard sale kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and runs till 2:30 p.m., with maps available at the Route 144 turnaround/parking area on the Wiscasset side of the Westport Island bridge. You’ll find over 50 families, extending from Lord and Main Roads south to East Shore Road and Red Gate Lane. There will be plenty of choices for the picky or the frivolous shopper, from arts and crafts, antiques, home furnishings, books, tools and much more.
Back to more delicious food: Pizza Night has started at the Squire Tarbox Inn on Mondays. You can take-out or dine in. In addition to custom-made pizzas, the inn will also offer a few appetizers, such as a salad or roasted peppers, for example, as well as soup and/or dessert. Orders should be called in (207-882-7693) by 4:45 or 5 p.m., for pick up or dining from 5:30 to 7 p.m. There’s a nice variety of toppings and sauces, and though their availability may change weekly, here’s some of the tasty choices: white or red sauce, olives, beets, apples, tomatoes, spinach, kale, mushrooms, bacon, ground beef, sausage, pepperoni, smoked salmon, shrimp, anchovies, mozzarella, feta or chevre cheese.
The inn is the perfect place for the upcoming farm-to-table dinner to benefit the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. Read more about it in section 2, page 14 (back page).
Now that most of our spring chores are done, and the mower is broken in again, it’s time for a different kind of fun. On Saturday, June 14, the Westport Community Association welcomes all to a square dance, with caller Walter Bull, at 7 p.m. at the town hall. Read more in Goings On (first page of the second section of the paper). The whole idea is to enjoy ourselves, socialize a bit, and exercise a little. Sounds too good! Even better, there is no charge, so we hope you’ll talk your whole family into coming.
