Residents of Westport Island have their municipal elections and annual town meeting June 26 and 27.
Voting will begin at noon on Friday and last until 7 p.m. at the town hall. Voters will elect a second selectman and a Regional School Unit 12 board member.
Incumbent Second Selectman Gerald "Jerry" Bodmer is alone on the ballot for the seat but faces a challenge from write-in candidate Reginald Lee.
On Saturday, the open town meeting to decide all other warrant articles begins at 9 a.m. at the town hall. Overall, the proposed town budget is $2,068211.73, which is a decrease of $159,939 from the previous year.
Articles to be decided on Saturday include articles 3-5, which concern the request by Theodore and Deborah Christie for a Commercial Fisheries/Maritime Activities (CFMA) district designation for their property.
Approval of article 7 would authorize salaries to town personnel of $75,143 and article 10 calls for the town to increase the property tax levy limit of $452,221 should the approved budget result in a higher tax commitment than the current limits.
Operating expenses for the town are subject to approval of article 21; the amount requested is $35,454.
Several of the articles address conservation, preservation and grant applications and these include funding for the town’s history committee, a $10,000 set aside to match funds for future grants and an amount to cover operating expenses for the conservation commission.
Article 25 requests $72,068 for Westport Island’s share of the costs for the Wiscasset Transfer Station’s operating expenses. Snow removal (article 26) and road and bridge maintenance (article 27) are the highest cost items on the warrant. Each of the two articles ask for $100,000 in funding and the excise tax collected for motor vehicles will be used to fund a portion of the snow removal costs.
Westport’s Volunteer Fire Department and emergency services are the subject of four of the articles including $18,000 for direct purchases, $28,201.76 to repay the coming year’s debt service on the purchase of the fire truck, and $1,000 to train selected residents as emergency medical technicians. Any residents who receive training would commit to serve the town.
