Westport Island selectmen review generator work, abatement request
Meeting Monday, Nov. 7, Westport Island selectmen reviewed progress toward the fire department generator, property boundaries and the island’s Thanksgiving dinner.
Selectmen were notified by G & D Cromwell General Contractors that the firm had set the generator on the foundation at the firehouse. The company donated its time and a backhoe for the project. The total amount of the donation was estimated to be $200.
Selectmen reviewed correspondence from property owner Constance Ostis who has attended previous selectmen’s meetings to discuss tree growth and abatements for her property, Lot 56. There is an apparent issue as to the size of the lot. According to a summary provided by Ostis in a letter read at the Nov. 7 meeting, the expert retained by the family since 1995 determined there are 27 acres. However, the town tax map and the deed indicate 31 acres and the tax bill has reflected that acreage.
Ostis’ letter explains that she has discovered what may be the cause for the discrepancy, writing that “A stone wall incorrectly appears to be the natural boundary” between the Ostis property and the abutting owner, Helen Dunton. A review of the 1815 lot map shows that the property line extends beyond the wall. Ostis is requesting an abatement of taxes paid for the four acres in question. The matter will be discussed at a future meeting.
The selectmen distributed a copy of a flyer from resident Nita Greenleaf notifying island residents of a free Thanksgiving dinner to be offered at the Westport Town Hall on Thursday, Nov. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m. The dinner will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy and drinks.
The dinner is being prepared and served by Greenleaf, her daughter Joyce Spicer and friend Louise Speese. Donations to cover the costs are accepted and transportation to the dinner or home delivery by Greenleaf’s husband, Bud, can be arranged. Those interested may call Nita Greenleaf for more information at ( 882-7139 or 882-6636.
