Westport selectmen issue deadline for Baker Road cleanup
After a lengthy series of discussions and letters from its attorney, the Westport Board of Selectmen has issued a final deadline to Albert Greenleaf Jr. to remove debris that was illegally placed on Baker Road.
Selectmen said Greenleaf has placed boulders, trees, stumps and an old boat along the public way, narrowing the 33-foot road by approximately 8 feet and creating a potential problem for the passage of emergency vehicles and others.
According to information provided at the selectmen’s meeting on Monday evening, June 8, the issues with Greenleaf go back to 2008 when he began placing debris on the road and was repeatedly asked to clear the material, which he subsequently did.
The problem has occurred again and the attorney representing the town sent a letter to Greenleaf on May 26, instructing him to remove the materials from the road by June 5. Greenleaf responded to the letter on June 3 when he phoned board members to ask for a meeting with them and Road Commissioner Garry Cromwell to provide more information about the board’s request.
On June 2, an attorney representing the town sent another letter to Greenleaf encouraging him to set up a meeting time with the board immediately.
“Time is of the essence here,” wrote attorney William Dale. “Because the board has determined that unless all of these materials are moved out of the ROW by noontime on Friday, June 19, the town will file a civil lawsuit against you in superior court ....”
