What Grayling needs
A promise is a promise.
When a cat named Grayling lost his home in Woolwich due to his owner’s move, the Bath-based nonprofit A Paw in the Door took him in and took on the task of finding him a home. That’s part of what the all-volunteer group, with cats up for adoption at Ames Supply in Wiscasset and elsewhere, does. But in Grayling’s case, the search is dragging on despite the gray cat’s striking look, affectionate ways and excellent litter box skills.
Paw has its incoming cats tested, and Grayling’s results came back positive for feline leukemia. He might never get sick from it, Paw’s adoption coordinator Joanne Adams said; but he can’t go to a home with other cats unless they’re leukemia-positive, too. Other cats could catch it from him, although dogs or other pets would be fine for him to live with, Adams said.
The right owner would also have a home with an outdoor enclosure, or allow Paw to build one at the new home, so the young, neutered male cat can get in some of the outdoor time he was used to in Woolwich. He got that home by showing up at the owner’s barn. Paw volunteers said he’s been with them since last winter and, when he’s not playing or cuddling, he sits looking out a window at the orginization’s “Paw Palace.”
If he develops symptoms of the leukemia, Paw will cover the costs for the medical treatment the rest of his life, Paw leaders said.
“Grayling is a quiet boy who will take a large space in your heart,” Paw’s profile on him states.
