BILL PEARSON/Boothbay RegisterThe Wiscasset boys' basketball term is looking for its third consecutive trip to the Class D South Tournament. The team is currently in ninth place with a 6-2 record so as the season gets closer to February, every game has added importance.
Last week, Wiscasset lost to No. 6 Old Orchard Beach, 68-59, on Jan. 2. The Wolverines rebounded a couple days later, on Jan. 5, beating Richmond, 79-67.
The past week was a sample of the team's performance this season. Sometimes great and sometimes not so good. Against Old Orchard Beac, poor shooting hampered the Wolverines' chances.
Late in the third quarter, OOB hit on consecutive 3-pointers which took a six-point game to a 12-point deficit. "It's been that type of a season," Wolverine Julien King said. "Sometimes we play great and blow them out. Other times we struggle, like today against Old Orchard Beach. We've been hit-or-miss this season, but I know we can play better."
A poor shooting performance coupled with OOB's effort spelled doom for the Wolverines. "That was by far the worst shooting performance of the year," Coach Jamey Roy said. "We were just out-hustled and out-worked today. The team that wanted it more won."
Wiscasset's 6-2 record is where Roy thought his team would be at this point in the season. Roy is happy with his team defense and concerned about his offense. "On defense, we are doing things right. Playing good man-to-man. Calling switches and rebounding. It's on offense we need improvement."
The Wolverines were led in scoring by King and Landin Shirey with 15 points apiece. Other scorers were Teagan Marr with seven. Tyler Mank and Ben Gapski both had six. Paul Landers scored five and Spencer Smith-Pinkham scored three.
Wiscasset plays next on Friday, against No. 4 Buckfield (4-4) in Buckfield.
