Wiscasset celebrates diversity
Wiscasset High School's (WHS) Students for Social Justice Club sponsored their annual Diversity Day on May 15. This day of diversified activities and speakers encourages students and staff at the high school and middle school to get involved and learn new and interesting things. Everything from French cooking to meeting live llamas from South America fill the day.
Beforehand students and staff were given choices as to which workshops most interested them. It was a full day of learning new things and experiencing the many flavors of diversity and what it means for us as global citizens.
Sammia Nasrin spoke about what it is like to be a high school student in Pakistan and her experiences coming to America as an exchange student.
The “Speaking Up For Us” workshop was led by adults with disabilities that talked about their life experiences and ways that people with disabilities can be better listened to and heard.
The keynote speaker was El-Fadel Arbab, a refugee from Darfur, Sudan. He spoke about his experiences as a survivor of a militia attack when he was only 12 years old and the genocide in Darfur.
