A Wiscasset Fourth
Doris Pendleton walked from home on a muggy July 4 morning Friday, to the nearby waterfront for American Legion Post 54’s flag-raising. The widow of World War II veteran Maurice Pendleton goes every year. Their son Peter Pendleton, a Vietnam War veteran, died 22 years ago.
Earlier, on Hooper Street, 9-year-old Cecil Clifford waited for the parade in a shirt he and his family designed the night before, in honor of his grandfather Raymond Eon. The Vietnam War veteran couldn’t get to the parade, his daughter, Clifford’s mother Nicole Clifford said.
Parade-goers as well as the floats carried out the parade’s theme, “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Andrew Lincoln of Wiscasset wore a shirt with a flag design. The 16-year-old Wiscasset High School student, a junior this fall, said he has gone to Wiscasset’s July 4 parades his whole life. And he wasn’t too old to take any candy that would be coming his way.
“I’ll grab it,” he said on the Hooper Street sidewalk.
At the Wiscasset Yacht Club Friday, member Alan Boyes competed with children in duck races. The yellow toy ducks traveled down a water slide to a kiddie pool. The duck Gavin Albert, 8, of Wiscasset sent down the slide bettered Boyes’ entrant in both of Albert’s tries at the game.
“Hey, you’ve got a fast duck there,” Albert’s mother Tanya Albert told her son.
“A loaf of bread. A pound of meat. And all the mustard you can eat,” came the call from the tent where the Wiscasset Fire Department was selling hot dogs.
Skies darkened during the Legion’s ceremony but the rain held off until after the parade and it were both done. During the ceremony, Wiscasset Selectmen’s Vice Chairman Ben Rines Jr. presented the parade’s second-time grand marshal, Wiscasset’s Ruth Applin, 97, with the town’s award of appreciation for her many years of volunteerism and service.
The Legion honored veterans Donald Munsey and Kenneth Chaney with awards. Wiscasset Parks and Recreation Director Todd Souza, who led the event at the waterfront, called for applause for Post 54’s successful project to get American flags mounted along town streets this year.
So far, 100 flags are up and donations continue to be accepted, Post Commander William Cossette Jr. said.
Souza told the crowd to check the town’s website for word on whether the fireworks show, moved from Friday to Saturday, July 5 at 9 p.m., would still be happening. Winds may force their cancellation, he said. Souza advised event-goers they could also call the Wiscasset Police Department at 207-882-8202 on Saturday to find out; and Souza will be letting the Wiscasset Newspaper know also, so look for an update at www.wiscassetnewspaper.com on Saturday.
