Wiscasset group helps veterans and families
Members of the Bradford Sortwell-Wright Unit #54 of Wiscasset of the American Legion Auxiliary have been working on projects to assist veterans and children of military families.
The members have prepared backpacks filled with coloring books, pens and pencils. Diane Munsey and her daughter, Lena Gage, a new member of the unit, have used their crocheting and knitting talents to make baby blankets, sweater sets and hats.
All these items have been delivered to past department president Charlotte Wing Doyle for children and youth programs supported by the organization. One such program is “Operation: Military Kids,” which was established to assist the children of parents serving in the military.
Munsey and Gage have also made afghans that have been distributed to veterans at the Togus VA Medical Center in Augusta.
“Lena does it because she loves to crochet and gets to help veterans and their families,” Munsey said.
The Auxiliary will also be holding a bake sale on June 1 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Ames True Value on Route 1 in Wiscasset. Poppy donations will be also accepted during that time.
